Understanding the Environment of Note Taking!
Backstory
Taking notes is a crucial element to any academic and work environment, yet it is something that is constantly overlooked. Effective note taking has proven to be beneficial for both environments. Taking notes has many benefits, from improved focus to enhanced memory. Come explore more about note taking, and its overall impact it has had.
Key Issues:
Research indicates that students fail to record 40% of the important points in a typical lecture, with first-year students recording, on average, only 11%. Material written on the blackboard makes it into student’s notes at a higher rate than material communicated verbally: student record most of the blackboard information, but only about 10% of information delivered orally. However, students are selective about which lecture material to record, so that while overall recording may be low, recording of main ideas may be quite high. Students record 90% of the main ideas, but not more than 11% of the supporting ideas.
Impact: Unfortunately, student’s notes are often inaccurate. Inaccuracies in student notes occur most frequently when students are copying diagrams, numerical figures, equations, and items on transparencies – much of which is essential material. Furter, corrections to notes that are identified during class are seldom incorporated into notes once they are written.
Biggest Impact
As stated earlier, note-taking is a valuable skill that can have many benefits, if approached correctly.
Even though notetaking has consistently been present in our lives, some of us may not be effective in notetaking. It’s not your fault though, as there are many factors that weigh in overall effectiveness. Factors like learning style, type of content, and time constraints are all elements of note-taking that can have a heavy impact. So, we need to be able to understand how to effectively take notes…
Objective of site!
As you can see by now, the overall theme of the site is related to note taking. The goal of the project was to gather material related to note taking to share and create a site where users can further develop their skills around this topic. Hopefully, the site will provide a substantial amount of information related to the topic that can be helpful in the future. I also wanted users to be able to share note tips that they find useful, which is why I created a page where you can send us that tip you had in mind!
Pages and Description!
Overview: Includes brief backstory of why website was created, and general information related to notes.
Methods: Includes information and a quiz related note-taking methods, each useful for specific learning environments.
Create: A page that allows you to share us a note tip or feedback about the website. If the tip is appropriate and can be useful to other users, we will post it on our blog page.
Test Yourself: Includes a series of questions related to the material that you may find throughout the whole site.
Quiz Advice: Don’t worry if you get questions wrong! the site will give you the right answers after, we just hope you learn something! Have Fun!
A New Approach:
Now that we have a general idea how important this element is in the academic and work world, let’s go over some basics! Learning small new approaches can give us a good start before we dive into learning about methods.
Using Color: Using different colors throughout your notes can help you highlight major sections or main points. This can also be helpful with identifying and organizing relationships!
Using Symbols: Using different symbols can help you identify key elements within your notes. Examples include definitions, examples, etc….
Headings/Subheadings: Using headings and subheadings can be very useful in creating a foundation for the structure of your notes. This works well especially if notes cover new material.
Paraphrasing: If paraphrasing what you hear makes more sense to you, then try what works for you. Just remember to be mindful of information that needs to be noted exactly.
Keep it Short: Using phrases instead of full sentences can help you identify and memorize key points. This will force you to be more mindful of your note taking during the lecture and encourage further studying later on.
Visual Elements: Visual elements implemented into your notes can help you understand the material better. Some individuals are shown to learn better with visualization included.
